The Alder Centre provides a range of training courses and continuing professional development workshops, designed for anyone involved in helping relationships who is looking to develop their knowledge and skills. Our courses are delivered by qualified and experienced trainers who are themselves working in the subject areas and are therefore able to draw on their experience to enhance the theoretical input and student understanding.

We have a range of free and affordable training and awareness sessions to meet your needs and can also tailor packages depending on your circumstances or profession. We are able to cover a range of topics covering the spectrum of child bereavement, grief and loss and can be delivered at The Alder Centre of offsite. Training can vary from an hours basic awareness session to half a day, full day, a couple of days, to our 30 hours  accredited courses.

We currently offer two 30 hour courses accredited by Open Awards:

  • Understanding and Using Basic Counselling and Effective Communication Skills
  • Understanding and Working with Child Loss and Bereavement in Counselling and Helping Relationships

The courses are designed to encourage the development of reflective practice. In order to qualify for the accredited certificate there are two modes of assessment:

Reflective Log

Students are required to maintain a reflective log in which they will record the thoughts, feelings and behaviours that arise personally and professionally from their attendance on the course.

Assignment or Essay

Students are required to submit an essay or assignment of approximately 2,000 words, demonstrating theoretical understanding of the course content and that they have been able to translate this into a practical, personal or professional setting.

Whilst it is expected that students will be educated to a sufficient standard to complete the written work, the courses are predominantly skills-based and the entry requirements are kept to a minimum to ensure a rich mix of student participation.

In addition to the above we also offer accrediated training for volunteers delivering our Child Death Helpline, see here for more information.. Please contact the Centre for costs and more details of our courses and to discuss your requirements.

** Covid-19 Update – Restricted numbers are still in place and so face to face training is limited. Some training may be delivered online**
